Gunners were denied the unveiling of their new kit thanks to a colour clash but this didn't prevent the use of the new shorts and socks! The team continued its 4-5-1 formation and unveiled a new look defence of Byrne, Burrows, Marten & Monksmith and each of these players had a very good game.
The first half was a fairly even affair with few chances at each end. Gunners had some good opportunities to move the ball upfield but tried to keep hold of the ball too long and some of their attacks were broken up. Gunners did take the lead when after Neil Rumbold pounced onto a flick from Bill Maslin and his shot went in off the post.
In the second half Woodley Saints were the dominant side as the Gunners midfield could not maintain their energy in the second half (due to a recent lack of games). Woodley created more chances but a determined Gunners defence held them at bay.
The critical moment in the game came when the opposing forward was running towards goal with only Nick Burrows in the way, Nick using all his years of experience started to slowly stumble, tried to keep going and then finally fell over as the opponent ran past, fortunately the opposing forwards shot was inept and it trickled wide when he had a clear run on goal. Julian Willis then made three excellent saves, one from a free kick which was heading towards the corner of the goal and the other two from close range which kept Gunners in the game.
Gunners had a good chance to seal the win after Darren Fry played a short corner to John Monksmith who twisted past one defender and his shot cannoned of the underside of the bar.
The final few minutes ran out and Gunners earned a vital 3 points which kept them at the top of the table.
This was an extremely pleasing result, for the effort everyone put into the match. Gunners did not always play good football and were under pressure but the team kept going and were rewarded with the win. Julians vital saves earned him the Gunners "Man of the Match" award.
