Seasons Facts 2005/06

Story of the Season 2005/06

Season Summary

Gunners started the season with an entertaining 5-4 win against local rivals Chalfont Park with Bill Maslin the pick of Gunners players.

In the next game Bills good run of form continued with a 4 goal display against eventual title winners West End with Gunners winning 6-1.

Gunners dropped 3 points at home to Wokingham & Emmbrook and suffered due to the unavailability of several players at short notice and ended up fielding a weakened side.

Gunners earned a 2-2 draw against Good Companions with Marcus Randles Gunners star man which was a fair result.

Ross Nelson was the pick of the players against Purple Turtle in a 3-1 win.

Gunners were then hammered 6-0 by Abbey Res in another game where the team failed to get a decent squad together and could only muster 11 men.

Gunners then lost their second game in a row in the Berks & Bucks Cup to The Moderation with Lee Bonnici standing out for Gunners during the game.

The poor run of form continued with a 6-1 home defeat to DC Steamers.

Gunners then began to turn the season round and started with a 2-1 win against Earley HG Res with Peter Ali scoring and earning the "Man of the Match" award.

Paul Marten was Gunners star performer in the next game helping the team to a 2-0 win in the John Lusted Cup.

Gunners won the next Cup game 5-1 against Caversham United thanks to a Steve Tranter hat-trick and then followed up with another hat-trick against Wokingham & Emmbrook helping Gunners avenge their early season defeat with a 4-2. Paul Stout adding the other goal and earning the "Man of the Match" award.

The good run of form continued with a 2-0 away win against Ruscombe. Paul Marten was again Gunners star player.

Gunners then edged out Woodley Saints 1-0 led by an outstanding performance form Paul Stout.
Gunners lost to West End in the next round of the 4-3 after scoring two own goals. Stand in keeper Neil Oldcorn was Gunners best performer on the day.

However, Gunners bounced back in the league with a 3-0 win over Earley HG res after a superb team performance.

Ruscombe then turned Gunners over with a 2-0 win.

Phil Norton led Gunners to the double over Chalfont with a 6-2 win in which he also scored, this win put Gunners at the top of the table although other teams had games in hand.

Gunners maintained their position at the top of the table with a close 2-1 against Woodley Saints despite a poor performance. Neil Oldcorn was Gunners "Man of the Match".

Gunners faced a tough run in for the last few games with the team due to play fellow title contenders AFC Twyford twice and then West End and Abbey once. If Gunners could take points of each of these games then they would have a realistic chance of the league title.

Unfortunately, Gunners ambitions were ended quite quickly with two straight defeats (3-0 and 5-1 with Steve Tranter and Matt Rees earning the "Man of the Match" awards) in a row to AFC Twyford. West End started to run away with the league with the rest of the teams chasing.
Gunners then faced West End and lost 4-1 at home to leave Gunners at the bottom of a trailing pack chasing Runners-Up spot.

Three defeats in a row left Gunners short of confidence and they could only muster a draw against Good Companions with Paul Stout Gunners best player on the day.

Gunners then faced 3 games in 7 days due to a fixture pile up. Gunners played well to beat DC Steamers 3-1 which dented their chances of Runners Up spot. Matt Rees was Gunners star man with a great defensive performance.

Gunners then lost narrowly 2-1 to Purple Turtle before feeling the effects of the previous games being given the run around by a youthful Abbey Res side who chalked up a 3-1 win with only a good performance from stand in keeper Lee Gallagher preventing a higher margin.

The end of the season saw Gunners finish in 6th place which was disappointing having been in pole position for a few weeks as the end of the season approached. However, Gunners poor run in to the end of the season and their failure to take points of other title contenders meant this positioning was justified.

The final record for the season saw Gunners, Play 26, Win 13, Draw 2 and Lose 11. Gunners scored 58 and conceded 59 goals
