Earley Gunners vs Abbey Res 0 - 3

Match Report

Gunners were outplayed by Abbey Res who eventually enjoyed a 3-0 win.

Gunners were totally outplayed in the first twenty minutes as the efforts of three games in six days caught up with Gunners who were playing a much younger team.

Abbey opened up Gunners down both flanks and put dangerous crosses into the box. It was only due to some awful finishing and Lee's efforts in goal that kept the score down to 0-0.

However, after Gunners rode the early period they were able to restrict Abbey to fewer chances although Gunners were unable to create any meaningful pressure.

Gunners best opportunity in the first half came through Bill Maslin who was one on one with the keeper and as he tried to round him, the keeper got his hand on the ball and made the save.
The half time score was 0-0 but Gunners could easily have been 3-0 down.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with Abbey having the majority of possession and spread the play well whilst Gunners battled hard defensively but did not control the ball for any long period and only created a couple of chances on the counter attack.

Abbey created a number of chances in the second half but were unable to take the lead and despite the overwhelming pressure there was a faint chance that Gunners may hang on. However, Abbey eventually broke the deadlock when they crossed the ball in from the left which was not cleared and fell into the attackers path leaving him with a simple tap in.

Abbey then sealed the game with two goals from two superb free kicks (one either side of the keeper) in a five minute spell. Paul Stout picked up an injury with a few minutes to go leaving Gunners to play the last five minutes with ten men.

Gunners "Man of the Match" was Lee Gallagher.

Purple Turtle vs Earley Gunners 2 - 1

Match Report

Gunners lost 2-1 to Purple Turtle in a poor game of football.

The state of the pitch made it difficult for both teams to play neat football and both teams started to rely on a hit and hope tactic.

Purple Turtle had the better of the earlier period and took a 1-0 lead when a long ball was played over the top and Gunners failed to clear the ball in the box leaving Purple Turtle to score from close range.

Gunners failed to put their foot on the ball for the first 20 minutes of the game but towards the end of the first half started to create a few moves but failed to turn these into chances.
The closest Gunners came to scoring was from set pieces.

Paul Stout earned a yellow card after going for the Purple Turtle defender as an act of retribution who was guilty of several late challenges.

The half time score was 1-0.

In the second half, the arrival of Steve Tranter saw his introduction up front and he came close within a few minutes when he pulled his shot wide from an angle.

Possession was more even this half with both teams creating counter attacks but it was Purple Turtle who made the most of theirs when they scored to make it 2-0.

Steve Tranter was then booked for an obvious barge on the opponent and Matt Rees was involved in an altercation with the same Purple Turtle defender who was clearly losing his rag.
Paul Ali was also involved in a handbags incident later in the game with an opponent who seemed to really want his shirt.

Gunners did not manage to create many clear cut chances and the game started to slip away. Gunners reverted to more offensive formation and they eventually added a goal when Matt Rees played Steve Tranter through who scored with a finish from an angle.

However, there was literally 30 seconds left on the clock and insufficient time for Gunners to create any more pressure which meant a 2-1 defeat in a game where Gunners under performed from start to finish.

DC Steamers vs Earley Gunners 1 - 3

Match Report

Gunners avenged their early season defeat to DC Steamers with a 3-1 away win.

Gunners looked the better side in the first half and created numerous chances to score. Gunners eventually took the lead when Marcus Randles slotted the ball home from close range after a pass from Bill Maslin.

DC Steamers failed to create many chances in the first half and Duncan saw more action dodging cricket balls than stopping the football.

Gunners came close on a number of occasions through Marcus, Peter and Steve but could not grab the second goal.

At the other end of the field, the defence looked particularly solid against DC Steamers attacks.
The half time score was 1-0.

In the second half, the game was more even. DC Steamers had more possession and eventually forced an equaliser when Lee Bonnici put the ball into his own goal.

DC Steamers had a good period of possession forcing a number of corners and came close on a couple of occasions. They came closest to scoring when they lobbed the keeper only for Peter Ali to head off the line.

Gunners did try and counter but never really created many good opportunities to regain the lead.

However, with fifteen minutes to go Steve Tranter turned the game. He gave Gunners the lead when Bill Maslin played him through for him to make the perfect chip over the keeper and then sealed the win when he picked up the ball in his own half and totally outpaced the DC Steamers defence, shrugged off the final challange before slotting the ball home from a tight angle.

The final score was a 3-1 win. There were a number of good performances all round with everyone battling well to keep Gunners competitive during the game but Gunners "Man of the Match" was Matt Rees for an awesome display in defence.
